Dancers have the ability to showcase their cultural pride in a unique way that transcends all boundaries, to tell a story or express an emotion without uttering a single word. For nearly half a century Rusalka has been capturing the imagination of audiences around the world, with its often fiery, always colourful presentation of Ukrainian dance. Tours of North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, combined with performances for heads of state, religious figures and royalty, have placed Rusalka among the most widely recognized Ukrainian dance groups in the world. Built on a foundation of discipline, devotion and camaraderie, Rusalka has become an integral part of the Winnipeg arts community. Over the years, Rusalka’s repertoire has grown to represent a diverse range of regions, styles and moods, with a number of world-renowned choreographers leaving their mark on the Ensemble. The Ensemble embarks on a new era as it begins preparing for its 50th Anniversary in 2012 under the Artistic Directorship of Marijka Stanowych, a former Rusalka dancer/instructor and professional Ballet teacher with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet Schools, who studied at the Choreographic School of the Ukrainian Folk Dance Ensemble named after Pavlo Virsky Deep within each dancer burns a passion to showcase the power and beauty of Ukrainian dance and they are eager to enchant audiences the experience that is, Rusalka!
